ARTIST PROFILE
I suppose mine is simply a story about a return to an old love.
I began sketching the places and people that interested me when I was too small to properly hold a pencil. My work evolved until I was painting seriously and selling pieces as a young adult. I had a variety of other interests and ambitions, however, including health care. I eventually chose and prepared for a career as a hospital executive. I became immersed in the challenges of this exciting work, married and began raising a family. Unfortunately, there just didn't seem to be much time for art.
Over the years as I moved my family several times for better positions, raised my two sons and struggled through divorce, I began to sense that no matter how successful I was, I would never derive full satisfaction from my career. I began painting again to relax and recharge. I unexpectedly rediscovered the simple joys I had known years before and a new level of creative accomplishment. After much soul searching, I decided to retire from corporate life and return to art. I also decided to relocate to southwest Colorado, a part of the country that has always inspired my best work.
These were pretty dramatic steps for a practical guy like me, but they've definitely been the right steps.
In many ways, it's been like coming home. I first visited the Uncompahgre Valley and the San Juans as a small boy vacationing with my parents, and returned nearly every year since to hike and climb. I know the landscape and its history well. The town of Montrose has a lively art community with a growing, diverse group of truly fine artists. I've felt readily accepted by them, and the professional advice, support and encouragement I've received has been wonderful. Equally gratifying has been the welcoming openness of the people of Montrose. Just saying "Hi" to folks on the street or returning the friendly wave of motorists can seem like small miracles to a refugee from a more tense and hurried world.
The mix of excitement and anxiety I feel on the verge of this rekindled career is pretty heady stuff, but I am resolutely focused on achieving something meaningful in art. The stunning landscapes and dramatic skies of Colorado, enriched with the stories of the diverse peoples who have lived here provide me with all the inspiration I need to do just that. I hope you enjoy the work you find on these pages. I welcome your comments and suggestions. Thanks for visiting!
